Emerging-market stocks rose to a seven-month high, oil climbed and copper gained for a fourth day on speculation American banks will repay $45 billion of government funds, fueling optimism the worst of the financial crisis is over.
The MSCI Emerging Markets Index of 23 developing nations added 2.1 percent at 11:20 a.m. in London, twice the gain in the MSCI World Index. Copper increased as much as 2.9 percent on the London Metal Exchange, extending its longest winning streak in a month. Oil exceeded $60 a barrel and the yen declined against all 16 of the world’s most-traded currencies.
